Kaizer Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic is not reading too much into his first Soweto Derby victory over Orlando Pirates saying it was a bit like going to the casino to gamble and coming out on top ... this time.

“I think it was a great game today but it could have gone either way and when you get to penalties it is a lottery, a bit like gambling,” Vermezovic says. “One day the ball can go in your favour, the next day it does not. This is football.

“It is good that we have won, but our real job starts in August and this is preparation towards that. We are taking things step-by-step, but this is a good victory for us on our road to success.”

Pirates tactician Ruud Krol was philosophical in defeat and would not blame his players for missing four penalties in the shoot-out.

“We train for penalties every week, but taking penalties in training and taking them under pressure in front of 25 000 people when it means something is very different,” Krol says. “We missed too many, definitely. Our goalkeeper [Moeneeb Josephs] tried his best to win the game for us, but we let him down a little when it was out turn to take the penalties.”
