Somewhat surprisingly perhaps for one of South Africa’s premier sporting venues, the 2011 Vodacom Challenge final will be the first time Coca-Cola Park has staged a match in the tournament’s history.

Coca-Cola Park was opened in 1928 and for much of its life has mostly been an ‘oval ball’ venue, with its most famous moment in that sport coming as South Africa won the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

In recent years it has been home to Orlando Pirates, before they moved to the Orlando Stadium, and has also been a regular venue for Bafana Bafana.

The final of the 2011 Vodacom Challenge will be staged 10 years on from the darkest day in the stadium’s history – the tragedy that unfolded on April 11, 2001, when 43 fans lost their lives in a stampede during a Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

The stadium was a venue for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and hosted seven matches, proving to be one of the great ‘atmosphere’ grounds of the tournament.
